Last week one other comfort dog and I were invited to visit a very special place in Chicago that is devoted to caring for children and teenagers: Heartland Alliance Human Care Services (HHCS). They are under contract with the federal government to take care of unaccompanied children who cross the boarder into the USA. Their facilities offer a full range of services for children, from safe housing, emotional support and trauma care, health care, education, recreation, mentoring, and other support.
My team and I participated in a multi-level review process that entailed background checks, health information, personal interviews, and training session concerning the policies and programs that HHSC uses to care for the children. I am involved in this program to assess how and if comfort dogs could be a significant asset for the care of these children. I expect to make two visits every month for the next six months.
The first session went very well. Some children were cautious with me, but most were happy to see and pet me. We ask that everyone pray for us and that we can bring the love, compassion, mercy, and presence of Jesus to these children, who have endured unspeakable suffering and pain.
Be in touch. Peace!
