Faith is pleased to announce that we are teaming with our sister congregation, Iglesia San Pablo-Aurora, to offer virtual ESL classes for the 2020-2021 academic year.
There had been much excitement around last fall’s startup of an ESL program at Faith. With guidance in planning from Diana Soerens, language professor at Wheaton College and Director of the ESL program at Iglesia San Pablo, and armed with a contingent of dedicated volunteers—teachers, childcare assistants, bakers and hosts from Faith and Hogar de Fe—by October 2019, Faith’s inaugural ESL classes had enrolled a dozen students who were eager to learn English. Over the following months, as enrollment grew, we were honored to be helping to enhance the lives of 23 adult learners. Unfortunately, in March, 2020, the academic year was cut short when Covid-19 made it impossible for us to safely continue offering onsite ESL sessions.
Now, we are privileged to announce that, by the grace of God, we will serve as a part of Iglesia San Pablo’s 2020-2021 ESL program. As such, volunteer members of Faith will join with teachers from San Pablo to instruct online classes, and our campus will serve as a local site from which students can obtain educational materials. In addition—should it once again become safe to gather in person, Faith will plan and host informal social events at which ESL students from the north suburban area may practice their developing skills as they mingle with native-English speakers. We praise God for the blessings of volunteers, technology and this work He has prepared in advance for us to be a blessing to others!
