Faith Outreach: Imani and Manna Gardens

This is the first in a series of monthly articles focusing on Faith’s outreach activities. We want to increase awareness of current activities and identify service opportunities for members and friends. Please share ideas or suggestions of additional outreach opportunities with Dick Hocking.

The Imani Garden at Faith is now underway and is fully planted. Seeds that were planted in seven beds are now emerging. Given the drought conditions, watering will be essential. Mark Kalbus and Dick Hocking have planted all remaining beds. This involved planting 120 plants, including sweet yellow, poblano, and bell peppers, and three kinds of tomatoes. There is one other large bed that has cucumbers using the “A” frames. This garden will need volunteer help for watering, weeding, and harvesting vegetables throughout the season. Please contact Dick Hocking if you are available to help.

Additionally, work at the Manna Garden at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Waukegan, has commenced. Faith’s partner in working on this garden is Mike Brankin of the Eden Restoration Project. Faith made a major donation in 2020 to purchase a used farm tractor and trailer. Mike will now be making a major effort to get the Manna Garden ready for planting. He has gained the help of a small group of volunteers, one of whom is a garden planner. Mike will be using the farm tractor to do the heavy soil prep work.
