North Chicago Outreach Update

NORTH CHICAGO OUTREACH UPDATE By Gerardo and Delin Hernandez

Home Bible Studies — The Latest on Our Home Bible Studies: To date, we have maintained seven home groups — located in North Chicago, Waukegan, and Round Lake — sharing with families and friends who live in the hosts’ neighborhoods. Thank you for your prayers; God has sustained us every step of the way.

Prayer Walk — Good times have arrived! We have begun going out on prayer walks with the community of Waukegan, knocking on doors and asking: “How can we pray for you?”

How Can We Pray For You? — How can we pray for you? We have set up a table in front of the parking lot at the Prince of Peace Church, covered with a tablecloth bearing a logo that asks: “How can we pray for you?” Our aim is to pray for the community—specifically for people out walking—by asking them if they are in need of prayer. We also provide music, featuring guitar
playing by members of the congregation, as we seek to share a message of hope through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Garden in Prince of Peace in Waukegan — Garden in Prince of Peace in Waukegan — Here is an update on our most recent work at the garden in Waukegan. In early May, we cleared the entire site with the help of volunteers from Faith Lutheran Church, working alongside the group of Hispanic residents from Waukegan and North Chicago who attend our Bible studies. We also showed them the area where the raised garden beds have been planted, as well as an adjacent section of ground that was prepared for cultivation. This season, we have planted onions, squash, *huauzontle* (a plant native from Mexico), jalapeños, tomatoes, and corn in this space.

Sharing with Pedro Saldana — Pedro has been living in Waukegan for 15 years; he is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico. we met him through Carlos Peña, the son of Modesto Peña. Carlos met Pedro about a year ago and invited him to plant in the Waukegan garden. Pedro began helping us in the garden at the beginning of May, and he has remained actively involved ever since. He has also started attending the Bible studies for the Hispanic community. We thank God for Pedro’s life and pray for his health; two years ago, he underwent surgery on a kidney, and he remains grateful to God for His mercy and sustenance to this very day. Glory be to God and to Jesus Christ. Amen. God is doing great things at faith Lutheran Church. Amen
