Brothers and sisters in Christ,
This past weekend we were blessed to have Dr. John Price, the superintendent for North Chicago School District 187, join us for worship and share a little from his perspective about our partnership in helping the public school students and their families.
About six months ago, I reached out to Dr. Price to learn more about the public school system in the city of North Chicago and how we as a church might partner with them to help. Through our conversation, the idea of Faith Lutheran Church hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for their scholarships that are awarded to high school graduates was agreed on.
At our end, we formed a leadership team for this effort—Kristen Skinner, Pat and Tam Daley, Dick Hocking, Jan Bersano, Kim Madden, Sean Gay, Bill Hume, Mike and Mary Petit, Mary Ann Nielson, Maree Garchow, Nic Cass, Sarah Chang, and myself. This team has done amazing work! Everyone is contributing great ideas and working together so well.
Dick Hocking was led to suggest that we should have mentoring be part of what we offer the students. Dick said, “It is not enough to raise scholarship funds; we need to provide successful examples, mentors who can encourage and even guide these young students to be successful even after college.” We all thought this was a great idea, so I brought it up to Dr. Price. He wholeheartedly supported it.
This week I meet with Concordia University Chicago to continue our conversation about how their students can be mentors in this ministry partnership with the public schools in the City of North Chicago. It is so amazing to think Faith is partnering with one of our Lutheran universities to serve our neighbors in the City of North Chicago. Please keep all of this in your personal prayers! Look for more information to come and share this with anyone you think would be interested in partnering with us.
Much to celebrate for all that God is doing.
V/r,
Pastor Jim
